"Nothing beats organic buzz, word-of-mouth marketing and recommendations from trusted sources. CISOs are bombarded with pushy sales tactics and cold calls too often. At this point, they're far likelier to repel us as potential customers than attract. Vendors will more successfully get their foot in the door by leveraging CISO partners, such as VARs or consulting firms they currently work with, to get the word out first.
The rest of the way depends on how well a pitch is crafted and connects with our business objectives. We acquire technology to meet specific needs and achieve business outcomes. It’s important for vendors to do their research beforehand to ensure they are familiar with our pain points and can help advance the maturity of our cybersecurity programs. It’s, unfortunately, all-too-common for me and my team to leave a meeting without a clear understanding about what the vendor was trying to sell or how it relates to us because they spent the majority of their pitch on over-hyped buzzwords and unnecessary deep dives into their tech. Founders should clearly and directly articulate the problem they are addressing and how their solution reduces our specific security risks as simply as possible. We just want to know how you plan on helping us achieve our goals."
