As a CISO, I’m often asked what it takes for a solution to make it into an organization’s defense infrastructure.
While there isn’t a single clear path to penetrating an organization’s sales defenses, I would argue that where it stands in its lifecycle plays a critical role in the success of a sales strategy. Put simply, your sales approach should depend on whether you’re approaching an older organization with a time-tested, well-functioning cybersecurity program vs. a new organization just starting to build its program from the ground up. The latter naturally houses many more opportunities for a startup to showcase their value, as it’s significantly harder to try and fit into an existing robust cybersecurity program. Remember, CISOs presiding over extensive programs must account for how nicely a new solution will play with the rest of his or her tools, whether it will require a new monitoring tool or new skill set and if it is capable of creating unknown security vulnerabilities due to a lack of testing.
